As posted earlier this year on my blog, prostate injections offer a new approach to prostate problems and BPH. There are now more products in development and more companies researching this concept. There is clear promise in this approach, why else would the big Pharma companies sink millions into development.
In simple terms here are the treatment options for BPH:
- Hospital based surgery works the best but it requires a formal operation with anesthesia and its associated complications. TURP is the gold standard and requires one or two nights in the hospital with several weeks of recovery after going home. Also it causes lack of ejaculation which some people don’t like.
- Minimally invasive procedures have the advantage of being done in the office. But they can be quite painful, require going home with a catheter and often make things worse before they get better. They may last for a limited time and then may require repeat. They may also result in loss of ejaculation
- Medications are effective in many cases of mild or moderate BPH but require life long commitment. No one knows the long-term side effects of these medications and how it affects other parts of the body. These drugs go
through the whole body even though its only needed in the prostate. If stopped the symptoms come back . Most cause loss of ejaculation.
Intra prostatic injections: This is injection of prostate medication only where it’s needed –in the prostate. It doesn’t surge through the body and hence has less chance of systemic side effects. It’s only done once or once in a while so again, their is less chance for side effects. Injections take minutes—as little as one minute in my experience and there is minimal discomfort. At this point it is still in trials and not yet commercially available. Some data has been published and shows that it works.
Be prepared to hear more about this new approach. If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering for future studies please let us know.
